In our own words - Reflections from the students
“ I thought that there was going to be a lot of invasive plants but there were not. It was like a big forest with little invasive plants. My goals were to cut down invasive plants and to plant new trees, learn new things about plants and contribute to the community. This experience changed the way I think about invasive plants because all invasive plants do not hurt humans”.
- Natnael T. "It was good for me and my résumé. For example, I learned that poison ivy has three leaves." - Bryan C.B “I think that the community park is a very important place for all the people because in the park they have a nice place, but they have plants that can hurt people too.” - Ishmeal K. Before the trip, I thought that..."This trip would be like picking up unneeded plants from the park and this then will let plants grow faster." Afterwards, I thought that... "This field trip was like what I thought first. It was really fun and cool. We picked plants and planted trees, and asked questions of what we don't understand."
"I want to a share my goals: to have different kinds of conversations with explorers and scientists if they are there. I think this trip was good because I learned a lot about plants." - Teshay M. Before the field trip, I was interested to know what was going to happen. After the field trip I learned about plant that I've never seen before and about poisonous plants and that was very fun. I accomplished my goal because I was interested to know how poisonous plants can hurt you. I changed my way of thinking because before I thought that planting plants was going to be boring but that was fun and interesting for me. - Girum A. |
“Community stewardship is important to me because I learned how we maintain a healthy environment. I did my best to help and learn new things. For example, how do we plant trees or how do soil and water help to plant? In our field trip, we learned that solid soil is very important for the plants to get nutrients. My goals are teach to other people the new things that I learned and get a healthy environment with plants. Finally, it was a fun and educational time. I hope we have another great field trip”.
- Rodrigo B. “My expectation for Community Stewardship Day was the students would work together to preserve a healthy environment. On our field trip, we pulled off the English Ivy from the trees, took pictures of our friends working together and listened to the information given by the expert volunteers. Community stewardship is important for me because it helps people to work together to preserve a healthy environment and it changed my perspective by teaching me what invasive plants are, how species become invasive, and what effect can they have.” - Elizabeth T. My goal was to learn how the water treatment plants clean water for us and another goal was to learn about how to build boats. The experience changed my way of thinking because it let me know what is necessary to avoid contaminating the water. - Esteban C. |
"Everything was good. Everyone was happy on the field trip because everyone learned about the environment, everyone was very happy, and the teachers were happy, too. We learned how we can plant a tree and what you need to plant a tree."
- Daniel C. "Community stewardship is important to me because I learned how we plant plants and also we cut down plants the which were invasive." - Maverick A. “In the TC Williams Discovery Garden, we were learning how to grow and maintain plants as well as we all worked hard and then rested for a while. They taught me how to cut grass and then water the plants with water.” - Baldemar P. "Community stewardship day was so important because we had fun and learned a lot of things like how water from the toilet goes to the river and how they clean the water mostly by using bacteria. After that, they remove the bacteria from the water." - Sofanias T. To be a steward to the environment in Alexandria, first, you need to participate in helping farmers. Also, you need to keep the environment clean. in Addition, you could STOP others from cutting the plants. Last, we have to NOT use fertilizers because when it gets to the water it will make algae grows in the water and that will cause a dead zone. It is important to the whole community to be a steward to the environment because if we all never use fertilizers, then we will prevent dead zones from happening. -Muhannad A. |
